Holistic Therapies have evolved over thousands of years and differ greatly in their approach to modern Western medicine. Rather than treating an individual symptom (eg a migraine) in isolation, a holistic therapist will look at the whole person – mind, body, spirit and emotional state – to identify and treat any imbalances which could be causing the client’s symptoms or “disease”. By helping to restore balance (homeostasis) mind, body and spirit can work in harmony, improving energy flow and vitality and allowing the body to heal itself naturally.

What are Holistic Therapies and why try them?
Complementary – not alternative
Complementary Therapies are also ideal to use alongside conventional medicine to help cope with stress, anxiety, fatigue and pain, especially if caused by chronic or degenerative illness. They are rarely contraindicated and have few side effects.

Prevention is better than cure
In today’s fast-paced and stressful world, our minds and bodies are put to the test daily and it has been reported that around 75% of illness is stress related.
Stress induces the “Fight or flight” response. This is primarily a primitive response to our brains telling us that we are in danger (think caveman being chased by a wild animal!). All five senses are heightened and increased adrenalin is circulated around the body to enable us to run away or stay and fight. A certain amount of stress is an important (and potentially life-saving) part of our lives. However, due to the increased stress of modern day life, our bodies can go into a permanent fight or flight situation which leaves muscles overly-tensed and fatigued, blood pressure increased , minds unable to switch off and can also have a negative effect on our digestive and reproductive systems. It also leaves us more vulnerable to illness.
By engaging the parasympathetic (rest and digest) system, our body is taken off high alert. Muscles relax, our digestive systems start to work properly again, blood pressure lowers, our senses return to their normal state and balance of mind and body (homeostasis) can be achieved. Research has shown that both massage and reflexology help to engage the parasympathic system and it is no coincidence that you feel sleepy or hungry after a treatment. You may even hear your tummy begin to rumble during your session – a sign that your digestive system is returning to its relaxed state!
